Te Mata House and the Tiaki Promise

Tiaki promise

While travelling in New Zealand I will

Care for land, sea and nature,

Treading lightly and leaving no trace

Travel safely, showing care

And consideration for all

Respect culture, travelling

With an open heart and mind

The Tiaki Promise is a commitment to care for New Zealand, for our people and culture, for now, and for future generations. Everyone who lives and travels here has a responsibility to look after it.

When staying at Te Mata House, we welcome you to our home located in beautiful Hawke’s Bay. We are the current kaitiakitanga, the guardians of this beautiful historical home, which is why we embrace the Tiaki promise and encourage all our guests and visitors to join us.

A large number of tourism businesses around the country are promoting this duty, a common goal we all share. We have been implementing sustainability in our business and continue to strive for better practices while still offering the best of luxury accommodation to our guests.

Luxury doesn’t always go hand-in-hand with sustainability, and this challenge is what we choose to embrace. To be mindful of our environment and keep offering a luxurious experience our guests won’t forget. Sustainable travel doesn’t mean sacrificing luxury, on the contrary, this could also be translated to ‘sustainability is the new luxury’.

We are trying to be more environmentally conscious of the consequences of global warming and how every single action we do affects our world. Hence, we’re trying to go the extra mile to do our bit to protecting our rohe (place). Simple practices such as recycling, water and energy saving, conscious shopping, not polluting and paying respect to protected areas and Māori cultural sites are just a few of the examples we follow at our property. See more about our practices here.

By following the Tiaki Promise, we’re committing to New Zealand’s wellbeing and our role as kaitiakitanga of Te Mata House.

Nau mai, haere mai ki Aotearoa me Te Mata House. Welcome to New Zealand and Te Mata House.
