Cycling in Hawke's Bay
There are so many reasons why cycling is good for you. To name a few, it strengthens your legs, lungs, immune system and mind, plus, it’s environmentally friendly, and it can take you to some pretty amazing places. Luckily for us, Hawke’s Bay is a perfect destination for cycling!
The region comes with 200km of flat and easy-riding trails throughout, connecting award-winning wineries and restaurants, exceptional cafes, farmers’ markets and beaches. Plus, Hawke’s Bay’s magnificent weather is an added bonus that makes your riding experience one to brag about!
When visiting Te Mata House, grab one of our four Electra townie bikes and go for a cycle. There are plenty of options, but here’s a few of our favourites close to home.
1. Turn left out of Te Mata House and take a short cycle down to the Tuki Tuki river and follow the Landscapes trail towards Te Awanga. This ride takes you through vineyards, orchards and out to the coast where you can visit Clearview winery, Te Awanga winery and Elephant Hill winery. If you’re keen to push yourself a bit further, cycle out to Hygge café at Clifton Bay where the trail ends.
2. Turn right out of Te Mata House and follow the road to Havelock North village, stopping at Black Barn’s cellar door on your way. If you’re needing a coffee after your wine tasting, grab one at the nearby cafés, Bradshaw’s or Brother, before making your way into Havelock North village. Browse a few designer clothing and gift stores and head out on Middle Road to Birdwoods Gallery, Café, and sweet shop. The award-winning cafe is perfect for lunch or a sweet temptation.
3. For a super quick, but ever so rewarding ride, turn left out of Te Mata House, cross over to the limestone trail on the other side of the road and make your way to Craggy Range turning right onto Te Mata Mangateretere Road. Only a 15-minute cycle from Te Mata House, Craggy Range will offer you the best of the region in wine, food and atmosphere. Make sure you have us book you a table well in advance though as Craggy books out very quickly!
For all rides, remember to always wear your helmet, take water, pack the bike lock and ensure you have your puncture kit attached! If you feel like 'regular' cycling is too hard for you, don't worry, we can also book some e-bikes.
And after your exciting day out cycling, return to Te Mata House for a dip in the pool or a soak in your private hot tub.
